Context: This large vessel, with a modeled iguana surmounting the lid, is among the most impressive yet charming examples of Costa Rican pottery known. Sleek and plump, with a polished red surface, the iguana dominates the composition. The reptile's regal pose and expression are faintly comical, however, because iguanas are a prized food in rural Central America. Perhaps the bowl was a serving vessel for iguana stew.
