Context: Sculptural reliefs with scenes from the life of the historical Buddha, Sakyamuni, are among the most popular objects found in Gandharan art. They decorated Buddhist mountains in great profusion.This relief refers to the unsuccessful attempt by the demon Mara and his daughters to prevent the Buddha's enlightenment while he meditated under the bodhi tree. The bodhi tree (which symbolizes enlightenment) in the center divides the composition of the stele into two parts. Buddha stands at the left, surrounded by attendants. He is youthful and beautiful and conveys a sense of spirituality resulting from the victory over his tormentors. Facing him on the opposite side of the bodhi tree is Mara (shown here as an arrogant, youthful nobleman), in the company of his daughters, the beautiful temptresses, whose efforts to seduce Buddha prove futile.The Greco-Roman style of Gandhara (which developed in the aftermath of the Alexandrian invasion of Northwest India and flourished there during the first three centuries of the Christian era) has a very important place in the development of the Indian school of sculpture.
