Context: This gilded bronze sculpture represents Buddha's principal attendant, Kwanum. Made in Korea in the 8th century, small statues like this one were used for private worship. Beginning in the 6th century, images like this one were brought to Japan by the Korean priests who introduced the Buddhist faith into that country. These statues also helped to inspire Japan's own tradition of making and worshipping images of Buddhist deities.
