Context:

This elegantly simple ceramic figure is one of the masterpieces of early Zapotec sculpture. Zapotec rulers were interred in elaborate tombs with lavish offerings that usually included sets of effigy urns portraying deities or companions. This sculpture is from a matched set of such tomb guardians that also includes the nearly identical Scribe of Cuilapan, one of the most famous works in Oaxaca's archaeological museum. The glyphs inscribed on the figure's headdress (13 Water) and chest (13 Flint Knife) are calendar dates that may name the figure.
