Context:

Rare gold foil and rich purple wool indicate that this fragment came from a luxurious fabric. Interlacing knot patterns were believed to offer protection from danger and harm. Precious gold foil wrapped around a silk core forms the central rosettes within a two-strand interlaced diamond created in tapestry weave. All the surrounding designs are formed in another technique with an extra linen weft, known as supplementary weft wrapping. Linen pile loops served to absorb abrasion in furnishing fabrics and to provide insulation in tunics.
