Context: During the Han dynasty (206 BCE-CE 220), bronze was used to make a wide range of vessels as well as weights, tallies, tomb sculptures, lamps, censers, coins, mirrors, and other objects. The function of this small bronze image of a standing horse is unclear. Horses made of either ceramic or bronze were commonly used as tomb sculptures through the entire Han period, and their popularity reflects the role of the horse as a luxury. The short legs, stubby body, knotted tail, and arched neck of this horse are typical of sculptures of horses during the Eastern Han dynasty (25-220 CE), helping to date this work to the 1st or 2nd century CE.
