Context: Patrons often commissioned paintings to include themselves in moments of devotion, usually in scenes with the Madonna and Child or the Crucifixion. Known as ?donor portraits,' this particular painting was most likely commissioned by the Carthusian monk (or his order) depicted, although his identity remains unknown.
