Context: Tapestries with pastoral scenes such as this were not generally woven to order, as were narrative series, but were stocked by weavers for ready sale. Acquired by the aristocracy both as an investment and for practical reasons, they were hung on castle walls for decoration. Tapestries were also hung along streets during festivals, given as gifts, transported from one royal residence to another, and were even taken on military campaigns.
