Context: Kishangarh (situated between the cities of Jodhpur and Jaipur) is one of the most accomplished schools of Rajasthani paintings. It produced its greatest paintings from the mid-18th century until the 1770s under the reigns of Maharaja Savant Singh (1748-1757) and his son Sardar Singh (1757-1765).In this portrait, Sardar Singh is seated on a terrace with his queen. Four females stand in attendance behind them. They are all listening to music performed by a quartet of female musicians. In the background there is an extensive landscape with a lake, hills, waterfalls, and a blue skyline with just a hint of pink, suggesting late afternoon shortly before sunset. The lavish attire of the royal couple and their courtly retinue, the marvelous details in the landscape with frolicking ducks in the water and animals roaming the hills, and the atmospheric effect and rich palette of colors-in the rusty hills, green vegetation, and colorful clothing-make this painting one of the most appealing works of the Kishangarh school.
