Context: Lyonel Feininger belonged to the German Expressionist group Der Sturm (The Storm) founded in Berlin in 1912. This painting is based on his sketches of the small village of Markwippach in central Germany, where he frequently hiked through the countryside. Although utilizing the flattened and fragmented planes of Cubism, the intense colors and angular forms lend a particularly dynamic effect to the village, which seems to be revolving around a church. By suggesting a scene both destroyed and reconstructed, Feininger conveyed the utopian desire of the German Expressionists to remake the world.
