Style or Period: France, 19th century
Context: Maurice Denis was one of the founding members of the Nabis movement, begun in France in 1888. These artists wished to break from prosaic Impressionism and reaffirm the spiritual and sacred quality of art. The Nabis (Hebrew for "prophet") acted as missionaries of an art inherited from Symbolism, in which reality mirrors spirituality, the one true value in human life.In this portrait of his sister-in-law, Eva Meurier, Denis experimented with several late-19th-century techniques: pointillism, in which tones are divided into little dots of pure color; japonism, derived from the flat composition of Japanese prints; and the Nabi interest in the outlined figures of Renaissance stained-glass windows. To illustrate Eva's talent as a musician, Denis rendered her with fine, sinuous, almost oriental hands, and her face is imperturbably focused on intimate thoughts.Denis intentionally painted the portrait upon a fragment of an abandoned picture, hints of which cleverly appear in the openings in the background and around the edges of the composition; the present portrait grows out of painting of the past.
