Context: "The Red Tower" refers to the Eiffel Tower, which was built as a centerpiece for the 1889 World's Fair at the edge of the Champs de Mars section of Paris. Originally constructed as the ultimate symbol of modern technology, by the time Delaunay chose it as a subject, it also served as a radio transmission tower. It is one of a series of around eleven paintings of this subject executed between 1909 and 1911. When the painting was reproduced in a catalogue in 1912, it had far more blank areas of canvas than it does now. Exactly when, or for what reason, the artist decided to revise this work is unknown.
