Context:

Like his master Boucher, Fragonard was a painter, draftsman and etcher who delighted in rendering benign genre, and lighthearted erotic themes, and exuberant landscapes. He abandoned a promising career as a history painter to work for a highly select circle of private patrons including Madame du Barry, the mistress of King Louis XV. Fragonard's drawings were avidly sought by contemporary collectors. The present drawing relates to a series of paintings dating about 1770-80; which illustrate the sacrifice of the rose theme. In this dreamlike sequence, a young woman has entered the temple of love to present a rose to a statue of Cupid perched atop a columnar pedestal. Meanwhile, Hymen, the god of marriage descends in a cloud and sears the sacrificial rose with a torch. The pulsating, fluid brushstrokes in gray and brown wash over graphite and black chalk typifies Fragonard's drawing technique. However, his use of pink and yellow watercolor respectively to render the flesh tones of the maiden and the rose, and the tunic is highly unusual.
