Context: John Taylor Arms looked back nostalgically to the middle ages, finding in medieval architecture a spirituality he felt was lacking in modern life. A technically superb draftsman, he sought to capture this spirit through meticulous transcription of the weathered stones of medieval buildings. This drawing is a study for a print commissioned by the Print Club of Cleveland.
