Context: The sixteen-year-old Sébastienne-Louis Gély is depicted shortly after her marriage to the famous revolutionary, Georges-Jacques Danton. With her is the son of Danton's first marriage, who is looking at prints through an optical viewer. Using etching and engraving, Cazenave achieved dramatic contrasts of light and dark. The technical tour de force creates Sébastienne's shimmering white satin skirt and the series of reflections in the mantlepiece mirror.
