Subject Description: The figures on this late Corinthian pyxis were drawn in silhouette and painted black with anatomical details picked out by incision. Patches of red and white paint were also used to enliven forms. This upright handled pyxis is decorated with a frieze of 'panthers,' a sphinx, a swan, a doe, and a goat, and the background is filled with so called 'splinter' rosettes. The painter of this pyxis is known as the Ampersand Painter because of the lengthened and curving shape he frequently gave to the tail of a sphinx, as here, and its similarity to the ampersand, the symbol often printed for 'and.' This is his name vase.
