Description: Conical wood drum with cowhide membranes; lower, non-sounding, membrane stretched over the base and up the sides of the body in a scalloped pattern; lower membrane and large upper sounding membrane are attached to each other by twisted rawhide lacing; laces are looped through holes in membrane edges and strung tight to each other; upper laces secured by an encircling rawhide cord weaving over and under the loops; pellet rattles inside body of unknown material.

Context: A large embuutu drum played with the hands, traditionally in a set of four drums called the nankasa (four-tuned). The ensemble playing accompanies a dance called the baakisimba, in which the dancer interprets the rhythm of one of the drums while the other drums provide accents and narrative sequencing. In Ganda society, drums traditionally belonged only to the king and his gift of a drum signaled an official appointment or promotion. Drums and drum ensembles were of different sizes and function. The nankasa ensemble was for social functions.
