Context: Dorothy Austin left Dallas at 17 to study at the Art Students League in New York, returning two years later to Texas, where she brought fresh and innovative stylistic energy to bear in her figural works. In "Noggin," Austin achieves an almost architectural solidity in the portrait head, employing deep, stylized incisions and highlighting the grain of the wood to express the psychic strength lying behind the closed eyes.
