Context: Duck Island is one of the Isles of Shoals located off the New England coast near Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Well known to ships' captains for its treacherous waters, the region, with its ancient granite outcroppings and magnificent ocean views, became a popular vacation spot by the end of the nineteenth century. Tourists were drawn in particular to the island of Appledore, where Celia Thaxter's salon was a magnet for Boston's artistic elite. During the summers her parlor and her equally well-known gardens became an artists' colony whose frequent visitors included Hassam and William Merritt Chase.Hassam had spent much of the 1880s in Paris studying at the Académie Julian and observing the impressionists at work. Like his French counterparts, who often painted a single view in different atmospheric conditions, Hassam recorded many views of the Isles of Shoals, although not in a sequence tied to hours of the day or seasons of the year. Hassam's approach to "Duck Island" is reminiscent of Monet's treatment of the cliffs at Étretat and Pourville, a lesson Hassam clearly absorbed in France. His colorful mosaic, reading as rocks, water, and sky from a distance, shifts to flickering strokes of color and light when viewed close at hand. Warm pink tones capture the mineral-flecked surfaces of the granite cliffs and impart a feeling of solidity despite the vibrant play of the brush. In the middle distance, Hassam's brushwork creates the illusion of scattered light glistening on the water; at the horizon his brush leaves smoother tracks denoting the hazy atmosphere. There is no hint of a dangerous reef or wave; the artist's concern is for the play of light and color on these vibrant surfaces rather than for the sea's storied past."Dallas Museum of Art: A Guide to the Collection," page 242
