Context: Boudin was the most important French forerunner of Impressionist landscape painting, both as a talent and a teacher. He pioneered in painting out of doors where he produced not just sketches, but also many of his finished landscapes. When he met Claude Monet he saw the potential talent in caricatures drawn by the eighteen-year-old artist and took him painting outdoors. "If I have become a painter," Monet said, "I owe it to Eugene Boudin."
