Context: A brilliant blue sky sets off the sandy tone of the arid landscape. Fascinated by the drama of the Italian countryside, filled with native peasants and exotic plants, Corot often sketched in the area around Rome. Corot was following the well-worn stepsof artists who had been attracted to the scenery of the Roman campagna (or countryside) for generations. Based on drawings and oil sketches made outdoors, this large canvas was carefully executed in the studio. Probably begun in Rome, where the artist lived between 1925 and 1828, it was finished on Corot's return to Paris.
