Context: Wood---freshly sawn planks, partially finished boats, even sawdust---dominates the composition. Cazin claimed that the painting depicted a boatyard in his native Boulogne. He recorded various tasks of boat building; in the foreground, a young man prepares caulking at a smokey fire; in the middle, men work on a scaffold; at the right, a newly-built vessel is pushed into the water. The enthusiasm that greeted this work at the 1876 Salon exhibition encouraged Cazin to move to Paris and dedicate himself to a painting career.
