As a winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome (Rome Prize), awarded annually by the French Academy, Cogniet received free room and board for five years of intense study and painting in the ancient city. The coveted award guaranteed a successful career within the Paris art establishment. The open window and brilliant sunshine allude to Cogniet's enthusiasm for Italian landscape.
