Context: Carpeaux was a resident student at the French Academy in Rome from 1856 to 1862 and became deeply impressed by the sculpture of Michelangelo. In spite of the objections of the Academy, he sought approval of this sculptural composition, which was to make his fame. As recounted in Dante's "Inferno," count Ugolino, arrested for treason and imprisoned in a tower to starve to death, devoured his children. This magnificent drawing probably served as the maquette that Carpeaux took to Paris to gain support for the project.
