Context: During the French Revolution, David became a deputy and voted for the execution of Louis XVI. After the fall of Robespierre on July 26, 1794, many of his followers, including David, were imprisoned for a short time. It was during his confinement that the artist made this highly finished portrait of a fellow prisoner, Jeanbon Saint-André (1748-1813), who had been elected to the convention in 1792. The bond that developed between the two men is attested by the inscription which translates: "A gift of friendship. Solace of affection. David made this in confinement in the third year of the French Revolution on July 28, 1795."
