Context:

Christus moves here beyond the flat neutral backgrounds of portraits by Jan van Eyck, Robert Campin, and Rogier van der Weyden, posing his subject in the corner of an implied room. Enhancing the effect of verisimilitude is a trompe-l'oeil frame with an inscribed sill upon which a fly rests momentarily.
