Context: This depiction of the Annunciation (the announcement of the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and bear a son) has all the essential elements of the story: the angel, the Virgin, and the dove of the Holy Spirit descending toward her. Mary has been reading (according to Saint Bernard) from the prophecy of Isaiah (7:14), 'A young woman is with child and she will bear a son.'Along with Tintoretto (1518-1594), Veronese became the dominant figure in Venetian painting after Titian (1485-1576) and received many major commissions, both religious and secular. He is best known for enormous, pageantlike scenes that bear witness to the sumptuous material splendor of Venice in its Golden Age.
