Context: The simple house on the banks of a lake recalls the pioneering life of settlers in the vast and beautiful American countryside. Made just after the painful destruction of the Civil War, this landscape is an idealistic recapturing of a gentler way of life, increasingly distant to urban America. The scene is based on sketches of Mount Hayes, New Hampshire, which Gifford made in 1865. The painting was sent to Paris in 1867 where it was shown at the Universal Exposition.
