Context:

This coffee pot and tray combine the attenuated form of a Turkish coffee pot with a distinctly Western thistle motif. They are a manifestation of the fascination both the Near and Far East held for Europeans and Americans in the late nineteenth century. This design, in production for several years and described in 1890 as an "after dinner coffee pot and tray," is the only known example of Gorham's use of the thistle motif.
