Context: Steam rises from the Solfatara, a sulphurous volcanic vent near Naples. In the distance is the Gulf of Pozzuoli, framed by an umbrella pine and a giant agave plant. For centuries, landscape artists had flocked to the countryside around Naples, attracted by dramatic vistas, volcanos, exotic peasants, and abundant classical associations. Hackert's sweeping composition and exacting method of painting details are typical of German Romantic art.
