Context: Paul Huet played an important role in launching the new style of naturalistic landscape painting in France. Although he received some formal training, early in his career he chose to turn directly to nature as a source of inspiration. In March of 1839, the Duc d'Orleans commissioned Huet to paint a series of views of the southern towns of France. View of Cannes is part of this group of highly finished watercolors. The work is a wonderful example of Huet's watercolors of the late 1830's, when his color became richer and denser and his application of wash was firmer and more structured.
