Context:

Surrealist Couple is a prime example of Surrealist collage. As a poet, playwright, art critic, and graphic artist, Hugnet was a prominent member of the Surrealist group from 1932 until 1939. His favorite medium was photo-collage, where he would collage together photographs taken from magazines and newspapers. Yet instead of allowing us to recognize the objects and images, he emphasizes their strangeness and incompatibility. The head of the man is a top hat settled on top of a bowler, while his body is a cut-out photograph of a doorway. The woman's costume consists of photographs of dresses and an illustration of a fantastic headdress. The termite mound behind them is equally as disconcerting. Like a dream, the image thwarts all attempts at rational discourse.
