Context: Alexander Calder, one of America's most imaginative and technically accomplished sculptors, invented the mobile in 1932. This extraordinary innovation resulted from his fascination with current astronomical discoveries and his interest in the organization of the universe. Calder's study of mechanical engineering also stimulated his exploration of the movement of objects in space. Usually painted in bold, primary colors, his movable sculptures are suspended from ceilings and bob and rotate in response to the slight-est breeze. Two Systems exemplifies Calder's whimsical, magical mobiles, which have become a distinctive part of mainstream 20th-century art. Unlike the artist's later, less personalized mobiles, the petal-like forms of this example are smaller and their surfaces appear hand-wrought.
