Context: Shown poised above a desert plain, Gérôme's lion evokes the majesty of this wild beast, a favorite subject of the artist. Gérôme had long been interested in African animals, and as a student had sketched lions in the Paris zoo and later hunted them on safari in North Africa.Gérôme may also have identified personally with lions. His family name is a variant of Jerome, a saint whose companion was a lion. The artist's middle name, Léon, means lion.
