Context: Unlike almost all his contemporaries who visited Europe in the first decades of the twentieth century, Marsden Hartley made Germany his geographical and aesthetic base. Quickly concluding the almost obligatory visit to Paris, he went on to Germanv in 1913 and again in 1914-15, and there came into contact with the group of German avant-garde artists known as the Blue Rider, in particular Franz Marc and Wassilv Kandinskv.
