In 1913 the young artist Grant Wood was a night student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. During the day he worked at the Kalo Shop, earning sixteen dollars a week. There he met Kristopher Haga, a Norwegian silversmith, and in June 1914 the two of them opened the Volund Workshop, named for the smith of Norse legend. For the most part, Wood and Haga produced modest silver items and gold jewelry, but along more ambitious lines they also made some hollowware like this rare hors d?oeuvres tray. They closed the shop after only eighteen months, probably for lack of funds. Wood went on to become a celebrated painter, best known for his American Gothic (1930). Haga returned to the Kalo Shop, where he worked until about 1920. The gently rounded forms and graceful spouts and handles of this coffee and tea service bring to mind the rolling curves and swelling treetops of Wood?s Birthplace of Herbert Hoover, West Branch, Iowa (1931), a painting now owned jointly by The Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Des Moines Art Center. The hors d?oeuvres tray demonstrates special skill and craftsmanship, as silver trays tend to weaken on the diagonal during shaping.
