Context: 'I have always tried,' wrote Henri Matisse, 'to hide my own efforts and wished my works to have the lightness and joyousness of a springtime which never lets anyone suspect the labors it has cost.' That aim is perfectly realized in this canvas, which Matisse painted in Nice during the early years of World War II. As such, it is a remarkable testimony to Matisse's dedication to the Fauvist principle of liberating color from nature. To anchor the explosive colors of vase and draperies, Matisse altered the hue of the wooden table, painting it a neutral black.
