Context: A blue Chinese porcelain bowl containing peaches and an orange rests unsteadily on a Turkish carpet carelessly heaped on a stone table. Next to the bowl is a tall covered goblet supported by an elaborate sculpted silver and gilded stand that incorporates a figure, either the young Bacchus or Hercules. At the left is a roemer (drinking glass) and at the back is a wineglass held in a metal stand. The dark setting allows light to sparkle on the glass, silver, and gold objects. A warm glow emanates from the marble tabletop, the agate knife handle, and the fruit. The delicate porcelain bowl, with its distinctive pattern of diagonal frets, is characteristic of the reign of the Ming emperor Wanli, which ended in 1620. Known in Holland as kraak (carrack) porcelain, most of these blue and white dishes were produced in China for export to the West and are often encounter-ed in Netherlandish still lifes. The import of Chinese porcelain virtually ceased in the 1640s because of political turmoil in China. The dish depicted here was therefore quite old and valuable.
