Context: Johann Liss studied in Holland and later traveled to Venice and Rome. This painting of Cupid--also called Amor, the god of love--reflects the influence of the sensuous images of Caravaggio and the rich colors of Venetian painting. It was probably painted in Venice shortly before the artist died of the plague in 1631.
