Context: The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1865 with a passage from Psalm 55: "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest."From the many events in David's turbulent life, Leighton chose to depict the king's moment of gravest doubt (2 Samuel 18). Having just learned of the death of his rebellious son Absalom at the hands of his own army, David has withdrawn to a chamber above the city gate. Casting aside his crown, which lies on the floor, the ruler muses on the conflicting demands of family and nation. David's words from the psalm express a yearning for freedom from these burdens.
