Biography: Arthur Allen Lewis American, 1873-1957Arthur Allen Lewis was a respected printmaker and educator, known especially for his woodcuts and etchings. Born in Mobile, Alabama, he attended the Buffalo Art Students League before moving to Paris in 1894 to studywith Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts. While in Paris, Lewis exhibited at various salons and in the 1900 Exposition Universelle, before returning to the United States in 1902. Other notable venues included the St. Louis Exposition (1904) and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (1915), where he was awarded bronze and gold medals, respectively. The quality of Lewis's work was recognized by Alfred Stieglitz, who included his etchings, drypoints, and bookplates in a 1909 exhibition at "291" and in 1916 published one of his photogravures in Camera Work. A member of the Photo-Secession and a noted educator, Lewis taught in New York at the Art Students League (1924-23) and at the New School of Social Research (1932-34). In 1935 he was electedNational Academician by the National Academy of Design. K.L.C.
