Context:

A celebrated painter, Andrea Mantegna was also the most skillful, inventive and influential printmaker of 15th century Italy.

Mantegna visited Florence in 1466 where he would have seen engravings in the so-called broad manner, developed by the printmaker Francesco Rosselli. This technique is distinguished by relatively broad lines for outlines and broad parallel strokes for hatching-all inspired by pen and ink drawing. Mantegna rendered this engraving in the broad manner.

The engraving reveals Mantegna's mastery of anatomy, foreshortening, and composition, which convincingly represent the human figure in space.
