Context:

At the Shore is a stunning example of Kandinsky's early printmaking artistry. Created in 1903, when he was a teacher at the Phalanx School in Munich, it reflects the strong influence of Jugendstil design it its schematic forms and decorative manner. In this hand-printed impression, Kandinsky thins out his colors to achieve a highly fluid, almost impressionistic image reminiscent of watercolor. The red of the woman's shawl and her yellow skin seem to float on the surface of the paper, while her gown meshes with the grey around her. Only the brown and green of the potted plant in the foreground give the image a sense of solidity and definition typical of the woodcut medium.
