Context:

This quilt is related in style and materials to the crazy quilt pattern which was very popular during the last quarter of the 19th century. However it could also be labeled as a friendship or album quilt as the separate squares were made by many individuals. We do not know if there was a special reason for the creation of the quilt, but Florence Barton Loring, wife of Charles Loring, the "father" of the Minneapolis Park System, made the list displayed here of the individual blocks when she assembled the quilt in 1905. Many of the names associated with each block are of prominent Minneapolis society woman, or the organizations to which they belonged.
