Context: Laurens is known primarily as a sculptor of simple, free-standing nudes. His sculptures, which were grounded in the Synthetic Cubist style of his friends Braque and Picasso, began to show signs of a new, more restrained classicism after the First World War. In this gouache drawing, Laurens works out the proportions and character of a reclining nude, a subject which took center stage in his sculpture of the early 1920s. With head and legs bound in dark Cubist planes, the hips and buttocks become a site of greater freedom and sensuality, signaling Laurens' own move towards a more naturalistic conception of the human form.
