Subject Description: After his failed attempt to assassinate the Qin dynasty emperor Shi Huangdi in 218 B.C., the warrior Zhang Liang (J: Choryo) went into hiding in Xiapei in Jiansu Province. There he was sought out by the sage Huangshi Gong (J: Koseki Ko) to lead a furthercampaign against the Qin tyrant. The meeting between the two became immortalized in legend. Huangshi Gong, travelling incognito as an old man on horseback, contrived to test Zhang Liang's character by dropping his shoe into the water as he crossed a small bridge. Zhang, sitting on the river bank, returned the shoe with such perfect courtesy that Huangshi presented him with a precious handscroll of secret military strategies. Zhang Liang became an early supporter of Liu Bang, instrumental in the overthrowof the Qin, and a general of great repute in the Han dynasty founded by Liu Bang. ('The Actor's Image', 1995)
