Context: A man abducts a young woman and flees with her to Musashi Plain (Musashino). Pursued by provincial officials, he hides her in a clump of bushes and runs off. When the officials threaten to set fire to the grass to smoke them out, the girl recites this poem, and the two are discovered, arrested, and taken away: Musashino wa (Do not set fire today) kyo wa no yaki so (To Musashi Plain,) wakakusa no (For my beloved husband) tsuma mo komoreri (Is hidden here,) ware mo komoreri (And so am I.)The lovers are shown in not very deep hiding before a tangle of long grasses, wild chrysanthemums, and bush clover, while their pursuers chase across a low bank in the background, waving blazing torches. In this illustration the men are dressed in Heian costume but the woman wears a kimono with long hanging sleeves (furisode) of late eighteenth-century fashion. Despite this anachronistic note, the delicacy of the figures and the Tosa style perspective imbue the design with a nostalgic, courtly flavor.
