Context: Four hosoban bust portraits of this kind by Shunko are known. Each shows an actor identified by two poem slips (tanzaku) hanging from tree branches above his head, one slip bearing his 'house' name (yago) and the other his pen name (haimyo, literally 'poetry name'). 'Otowaya' and 'Sancho,' written on slips hanging from branches of a white plum, were house name and poetry name, respectively, of the actor Onoe Matsusuke I (1744-1815). He is wearing a plain cloth cap, his kimono and sleeveless jacket are both decorated with oak leaves, and he carries a short, stubby pipe. The oak-leaf pattern provides a clue to a possible identification of the role, since one of the other portraits from this group shows Ichikawa Monnosuke II as the legendary strong-boy Kintoki wearing a similar oakleaf-patterned costume, in the joruri 'Shitenno Oeyama Iri', from part two of the play Otokoyama Furisode Genji, performed at the Kiri Theater in the eleventh month of 1785 (see 'The Actor's Image' catalogue, fig. 117.1, p.319). In this production Matsusuke I acted the role of Yodohachi the Cowherd. The pose, with the arm pointing one way and the head turned the other, suggests arrested movement, and the bushy eyebrows are drawn into a disdainful frown. Matsusuke I is depicted withthe same hooked nose and narrow eyes as in Shunko's portrait of 1780 (see 'The Actor's Image' catalogue, No. 113, p.310), and rather differently than in Shunsho's print showing the tor backstage and out of costume (see 'The Actor's Image' catalogue, No. 93, p.264).The purple and red of Matsusuke I's costume and cap have faded quite substantially, but no other impression is known.
