Context: The actors Nakayama Kojuro VI as Osada Taro Kagemune (in reality Hatcho Tsubute no Kiheiji) in the guise of a lamplighter of Gion Shrine (left), and Sawamura Sojuro III as Komatsu no Shigemori (right), in act three from part one of the play Yukimotsu Take Furisode Genji (Snow-Covered Bamboo: Genji in Long Sleeves). The opening-of-the-season (kaomise) production at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh month of 1785, Yukimotsu Take Furisode Genji, was set in the 'world' (sekai) of the twelfth century rivalry between the Taira and Minamoto (Genji) clans. Act three began with the three stars, Nakayama Kojuro Vl, Ichikawa Yaozo III, and Sawamura Sojuro III coming up through trapdoors dressed as pilgrims from Izu, Kamakura, and Kumano, respectively. The stage then revolved to reveal the precincts of Gion Shrine at night. Kojuro Vl reappeared wearing a straw headdress and carrying the oil jar of a lamplighter, the costume we see here. In reality he is Hatcho Tsubute no Kiheiji, in search of the precious white banner of the Genji, which has been hidden in one of the stone temple lanterns. The other character on stage is Komatsu no Shigemori, played by Sawamura Sojaro III, dressed in court robes and a black lacquered court hat (eboshi). He kneels holding a spool of red thread, whose end he has surreptitiously attached to the hem of the kimono worn by the suspicious-looking lamplighter in order to be able to follow him through the dark. Shunsho's print shows the actors' pose at the moment when Kiheiji realizes, to his fury, that he has been overtaken. Towering on high clogs over the kneeling courtier, he seems almost to be brandishing the oil jar as a weapon. Even the yellow straw of his headdress bristles angrily against the jet black sky.As described in Kabuki Nendaiki, the two were then joined on stage by Yaozo III as Evil Genta in an assassin's black kimono, and Otani Hiroji III as Namba no Jiro Tsuneto, wearing red body makeup and formal kamishimo robes.
