Context: Painted by a close follower of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), this picture was previously attributed to the master as well as several of his pupils. The dense, smoky shadows (called sfumato) enveloping the Virgin and Child are typical of Leonardo's style.Leonardo was court painter in Milan for much of the period between 1482 and 1513, where he taught a large number of artists. The Sforzesco Castle, seat of Milan's ruling Sforza family, can be seen though the left window behind the Virgin and Child.
